Jakab Guttmann moved to Budapest from Mitrovitz, Moravia. The Guttmann family lived poorly at the heart of Budapest's Jewish quarter, on Dob Street. Jakab worked at the Danube Freeport as a peddler. It was there, that his life was taken by a whirl in the river, in 1891. Alfréd became the eldest male in the famlily, at age 13.

Alfréd's youngest brother, Henrik Hajós also became an Olympic Champion swimmer when he won a Gold Medal at the 1906 "unofficial" Olimpics in Athens, as member of the Hungarian relay team.

Vilma and Alfréd got married in 1908, in Budapest's Great Synagogue on Dohány Street, the continent's largest Jewish temple.

Alfréd Hajós' only child, Endre, emmigrated to Scotland in 1936 where he became a successful journalist. Ironically, just like his father, he fought as a youngman on the Italian front: Alfréd on the side of the Central Powers in World War I., Endre, then Andrew E. Hargrave, as an Allied soldier during World War II.

The only decendent of Page: 3 Alfréd Hajós who lived in Hungary was his beloved grandson, Imre Hajós. Imre was 21 years old, a university student in Budapest, when killed in the October revolution of 1956.
